A Better Approach to Fixtures and Referee Development

Planning, communication and cooperation.

By Mark Heffernan

Fixtures are one of the most important parts of running a successful football league.

Clubs need reliable information to plan their seasons, organise facilities, manage volunteers and communicate with players.

Referees also need clear scheduling, proper support and a system that takes account of their availability.

My proposal is to establish a dedicated LDL Fixtures and Referee Development Group.

A Dedicated Fixtures Group

I would like to explore a group involving at least five suitable members, working within the league's rules and governance structures.

Its role would be to support the planning, coordination and administration of fixtures.

The group would work closely with clubs and referees to identify practical improvements.

Planning Ahead

I want to examine how the league could provide greater visibility of its annual fixture calendar.

This would help clubs plan around important dates, facility availability and other commitments.

We should also review the procedures for requesting postponements and rearranging fixtures, ensuring they are clear, consistent and fair.

Using Technology

Modern digital systems can improve communication without creating unnecessary work.

I would like to explore a system where clubs can access fixture information, receive updates, submit requests and provide feedback.

Surveys and questionnaires could also help the league understand recurring scheduling challenges.

The aim would be to reduce unnecessary administration while improving the quality of information available.

Supporting Referees

Referees are essential to football.

I want the proposed group to engage with referees and the relevant FAI structures on recruitment, retention, training, scheduling and support.

Referee fees should also be reviewed through proper consultation, taking account of sustainability and the league's finances.

Decisions Shaped by Consultation

No fixtures system can work effectively without the involvement of clubs and referees.

My approach would be to listen first, identify the practical challenges and develop improvements through cooperation.

Better planning and better communication should benefit everyone involved in the game.
