My Vision for the Future of Limerick Football

I want the LDL to become a centre of support, knowledge and development for football clubs throughout Limerick.

By Mark Heffernan

Football across Limerick city and county has an enormous amount to offer.

We have clubs with excellent facilities, strong financial structures and experienced committees. We also have clubs operating with limited resources, supported by dedicated volunteers who give their time week after week.

Every club is different, but I believe every club deserves the opportunity to develop and succeed.

My vision for the Limerick District League is to build an organisation that actively supports its affiliated clubs, both on and off the pitch.

I want the LDL to become more than a league that administers fixtures, results and disciplinary matters.

I want it to become a centre of support, knowledge and development for football clubs throughout Limerick.

Building Towards 2030

I am proposing a development programme called LDL 2030, focused on strengthening clubs and improving how the league supports them.

My initial priorities include:

  • Establishing a dedicated Club Support Taskforce.
  • Helping clubs achieve and maintain FAI Club Mark standards.
  • Supporting clubs with grants, funding and infrastructure development.
  • Improving fixture planning and communication.
  • Supporting referee recruitment and development.
  • Establishing clear and fair disciplinary procedures.
  • Creating better ways for clubs to contribute to league decisions.

I believe we already have an enormous amount of expertise within Limerick football.

We have experienced administrators, businesspeople, construction professionals, coaches and volunteers.

My ambition is to bring that expertise together and make it available to clubs that need additional support.

Listening to Our Clubs

Before introducing changes, we must understand what clubs need.

That means speaking directly with club representatives, listening to their concerns and recognising what is already working well.

I want to introduce regular surveys, consultations and opportunities for clubs to contribute to the league's future direction.

We should not make decisions based on assumptions when we can ask the people who are involved in running clubs every day.

A Practical Approach

I believe progress starts with common sense, good planning and people working together.

Not every club needs the same support. Some may need help with governance, others with funding, facilities, volunteers or administration.

The LDL should be capable of identifying those needs and helping clubs find practical solutions.

My ambition is simple: by 2030, I want to see a stronger Limerick District League, with stronger clubs and better opportunities for the future of football across our city and county.
